Interactive Reporting of Regional Census Data

Hi Guys,
I worked on ‘Regional Census Data – Nagpur Region, India (2011)’. I got district wise data from data.gov.in which is readily available. Nagpur region has six districts and over 6 thousand sub-districts (tehsils). We simply can not comprehend the data for analysis purpose from downloaded data files. Data had over 95 columns (95 columns !) so I did wrangling using Power Query then Power BI Desktop.
I had 6 workbooks, one for each district. All the files had same structures. I imported all the files, one by one, using Power Query and appended them all to one. I removed few irrelevant attributes and finalized the required structure. I then imported rectified data in Power BI Desktop to analyse and create visualizations.
1. Homepage :
Homepage gives overview of district wise population distribution, Male – Female numbers and number of households in districts and sub-districts.
a. Custom bubble chart depicts the districts wise population. Size of the bubbles shows the population density.
b. Hierarchy enabled column chart shows number of households in districts which when selected gives the number of households in sub-districts.
c. Image is embedded to give clear distinction between Male and Female population.

2. Literacy and Non working population :
Literacy & Non working tab gives percentage literacy rate as well as percentage non working population in districts and sub-districts.
a. Clustered column chart shows percentage literacy in districts and sub-districts. Literacy rate is calculated measure ( Literate population / Total population). Districts and sub-districts are sorted in descending order of literacy rate.
b. Clustered bar chart exemplifies the percentage of non working population in districts and sub-districts. Non working population is also calculated measure ( Non working population / Total population).
Literacy and Non working population charts are juxtaposed to understand the relationship between both. I have seen few sub-districts with higher literacy rate but they also have higher non working population percentage.
What can be the reason/s for districts/sub-districts having higher literacy rate also have higher non working percentage ? (Area to focus and investigate)
3. Working Distribution :
Working distribution tab gives the visual representation of working population percentage and population distribution among different sectors.
a. Hierarchy enabled clustered bar chart shows percentage of working population in districts and sub-districts. Working population is calculated measure (Working population / Total population).
b. Pie chart gives percentage population distribution among various sectors viz. agricultural labors, household industry workers, cultivators, other workers.
Graphs for working population and percentage distribution of work are placed together to analyse which are the key sectors to focus in case of areas with maximum and minimum percentage of working population.
This type of data representation gives more meaning to it and getting the insights out of it becomes very easy and intriguing.
Hope you like this initiative. You can play with the report : Census 2011-Nagpur Region
